Park wins third straight, 46-24, at Catholic High

12/12/2009

An emotional evening at Catholic High, in honor of senior Meg Skyrnecki, a four year basketball starter for the Cubs who was playing her final game before undergoing season-ending surgery, provided an extra challenge for visiting Park, on Friday. The Bruins, however, relied on defensive intensity to build a big early lead and they went on to win their third straight IAAM C Conference game, 46-24.

“Meg is an absolute warrior and a really, really good basketball player,” said Park coach Kevin Coll. “She plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played. We wish her all the best.”

Behind its vocal and charged-up crowd, Catholic came out of the gate strong and played Park even in the first quarter, which ended in an 8-8 deadlock.

But Park picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter, holding the Cubs scoreless and racing to a 22-8 advantage at the half. It was more of the same in the third quarter, as the Bruins outscored the Cubs 16-4.

On this night honoring seniors, Park was led by a pair. Forward Adrienne Tarver recorded eight points and eight steals, and guard Lucie Weinberg had eleven points, four rebounds, and four assists. Junior center Rose Coll racked up another double-double for the Bruins (3-1, 3-0), with twelve points and ten rebounds.. For Catholic (0-2, 0-3), junior guard Lindsey Torbeck had five points, and Skyrnecki had four.

The Bruins play a pair of non-conference games early next week before hosting St. John’s Catholic Prep on Friday night in a match-up of the two unbeaten teams in the “Y” division of the C conference. Catholic looks to get back on track at conference rival Beth Tfiloh on Thursday evening.
