Tauber wins second straight IAAM cross country title, while Severn's Farnham wins the B Conference race

10/29/2009

Between the A and B Conferences, 160 runners took the start Wednesday at Oregon Ridge.

John Carroll's Elizabeth Tauber strides towards here second consecutive IAAM individual cross country championship.
For a second consecutive year, John Carroll junior Elizabeth Tauber proved to be the best long distance runner in the IAAM, as she repeated as the individual champion at the 2009 IAAM Cross Country championships, Wednesday at Oregon Ridge.

Tauber covered the tough, hilly course in 19:25.50 and helped John Carroll narrowly defeat McDonogh, 33-36, for the A Conference team championship.

“I just knew I had to go out fast and get the lead like in the middle of the race because I knew I would have a kick at the end,” Tauber told RunningMaryland.com. “I had to get up the hills fast and surge to the top.”

McDonogh's Jo Bair made a gallant try to hang with Tauber, but eventually fell back for second place in 19:45.70.

Both McDonogh and John Carroll put four runners in the race's top 11 and it took officials more than a hour to sort out the scoring and determine the team champion.

After Baird, McDonogh took spots three, four and 11. Freshman Lauren Egan led that group, as she finished third overall in 20:03.90, followed closely by teammate Madeline Dulac (20:04.60). Finishing 11th was another Eagle freshman, Claire Sinnott who ran 21:28.50.

John Carroll's top finishers behind Tauber were Katelyn Colgain (5th - 20:11.00), Taylor Battaglia (6th - 21:05.50) and Rebecca Driver (9th - 21:22.60).

Bryn Mawr's Melissa Hexter and Notre Dame Prep's Laura Slaugher were the only runners outside of John Carroll and McDonogh who finished in the top ten. Hexter placed eighth in a time of 21:17.60, while Slaughter was 10th, finishing in 21:22.90.

NDP (82 points) was third in the team competition, followed by Archbishop Spalding (122), Bryn Mawr (138), Maryvale Prep (152), Mercy (160) and Mount de Sales (205).

The race for the B Conference individual title was a real barn burner, as Severn's Kendall Farnham (21:02.07) edged Colleen Randolf of St. Mary's by just three seconds.

St. Mary's, which went undefeated in the dual meet season, dominated the team race, outdistancing second-place Severn, 27-73.

"It was kind of muddy out here, which was disappointing because our times weren't great but with all the girls hyped up. It was really fun," Farnham told RunningMaryland, of her fourth individual win of the year.

In addition to Randolf, the Saints put four other runners in the top ten. That group included Mary Relser (5th -21:37.40), Leigh Ruland (21:57.10), Meghan Toomey (8th - 22:06.80) and Caroline Relser (10th - 22:35.90)

Glenelg Country's Emily Peterman ran a strong race and finished third, in 21:19.50. The Institute of Notre Dame had two top 10 finishers, as Julie Gesler (21:20.10) placed fourth and sister Amy Gesler (21:59.70) finished seventh. Also in the top 10 was Susie Feinstein (9th - 22:27.20) of Garrison Forest.
