Bryn Mawr's Choo takes No. 1 singles title in the A Conference tennis individual finals

10/23/2009

Bryn Mawr's Erica Choo, who lost in last year's A Conference No. 1 singles final, returned to capture the title in 2009.
Last year Erica Choo reached the IAAM A Conference No. 1 Singles tennis final, only to fall to close friend Lindsay Katz of Roland Park Country, who had been denied in two previous trips to the finals.

A fierce competitor, Choo did not like to lose, but she took comfort in seeing her friend achieve a long term goal. Yesterday at McDonogh, Choo made her return to the finals and got a chance to experience what Katz enjoyed last year, as she captured her own title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Audrey Todd of RPCS.

It was one of two individual titles on the day for Bryn Mawr, which also prevailed at No. 3 doubles, where Priya Bhasin and Chandler Matthai defeated Roland Park's top-seeded tandem of Heather Oros and Niccola Lynch, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Roland Park, which went undefeated in the regular season to capture the dual meet title also won two individual titles.

With the finals nearly resembling a dual meet between RPCS and Bryn Mawr, the Reds and Mawrtians also squared off at No. 2 singles, where Ellie DeMuth prevailed for Roland Park. DeMuth won the first set over Gina Hong, 6-4, before Hong was force to retire with an injury.

The Reds also captured the No. 2 doubles crown, as Jen Abrams and Hera Koliatsos won a tight match over Severn's Lily Cartwright and Jordan Harelbaus, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

The final A Conference title went to Mount de Sales and its No. 1 doubles team of Gabby Johnson and Maggie Andrew, who defeated Roland Park's Morgan Lambert and Kelsey Dwyer, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

In the B Conference, it was all McDonogh.

After sweeping through the dual meet season undefeated, the Eagles made the most of their home court advantage and swept all five individual crowns.

At No. 1 singles, Kristina Centenari defeated Katie Cole of St. Paul's School for Girls in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Teammate Lauren Cassel was equally impressive at No. 2 singles, as she rolled past Marta Cherpak of St. Paul's, 6-1, 6-0, for her title. The No. 1 doubles match was extremely close, but McDonogh's Chava Quinn and Emily Rosenfield kept the Eagles undefeated, as they claimed a 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Jacque Douglas and Katelyn Gerding of Archbishop Spalding.

The Eagles' No. 2 doubles team of Carly Geller and Bailey Ewing found the going a little easier, as they cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Park's tandem of Elizabeth Koontz and Ashley Suan.

Finally, Tiffany Monroe and Emma Kane made it a clean sweep for the Eagles, as they powered past Park's Chloe Shiras and Carly Basner, 6-2, 6-2, for the No. 3 doubles crown.
